Where does well water come from?

To some this might sound silly, but many new home owners who are moving to well water, simply don't know. Well water comes from the aquifer, in the Lubbock area we are mainly drilling in the Oagalla Aquifer. Under the Oagalla, there is another aquifer called the Dockum/Santa Rosa. The HPWD really has the best information for you learn about these wonderful creations which supply us with our most precious natural resource.

Why is well water hard?

Mineral accumulation is just a natural part of the water cycle. Your well water is not treated like municipal water is. Simply put, your well is a deep hole anywhere from 100' to 250'. You have a pump that brings the water up to a storage tank, most likely a pressure tank. The water enters your home directly from the pressure tank.

As water completes the water cycle, it flows over rocks. These rocks contain calcium and magnesium.

Is well water worse than municipal water?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no! Municipal water is not "soft" but it is treated per TCEQ requirements by the municipality. This insures the water is safe to drink. Municipal water is tested regularly for meeting the minimum safety standards by TCEQ. This testing may remove some of the hard minerals from the water.

We send a sample from all of our well water customers to an independent, 3rd party laboratory for testing. This insures we can get a reliable and complete look at the water report. There are occasions where well water is unsafe to drink. This report allows the Joey to work with the client to formulate a plan for the water treatment. Usually, a water softener, sediment filter and reverse osmosis system are enough. If not, Joey will plan a system to remove the unsafe contaminants. There is no one-size fits all approach to treating well water that has contaminants beyond hardness.
